why blog about retirement?

Someone suggested I was too young to retire.  My response was “there is a too young to retire?”

Knowing what I know now, I wish I had figured out how to do it earlier than I did.

There was a time when another name for retirement was“being put out to pasture”. We are fortunate to live in times where the term now is has a more positive and possible exciting cache. More like planting a new crop to reap.

Though I had dreams of endless poolside lounging, I knew there is still practical side to retirement. Paying the bills, keeping the house in good working order, keeping the body in good working order, not spending every day at the mall.

And I hoped, maybe knew, there was something else.

So I purposely set out to figure out the best way to spend the rest of my days.

I wondered – if I could dream it, could I fulfil that dream in retirement?

Some of my posts chronicles my journey in the early days of retirement (before the pandemic) and I hope it will be a resource for your own retirement based on what I learned  – things I thought about and what I did and didn’t do.

I wrote a lot about retirement in my journals before the pandemic.  When the world was another place.  I have reviewed those notes and added comments about them in the new world.  Noticing what is different.

I was encouraged to create things when I was very young. Young girls were expected to do crafts. In retrospect, I think it was because we were expected to always be waiting for something. Not going out to find things for ourselves. That’s what I did different. I went out an explored for myself. And mostly by myself. Ironically enough, here I am with a website of what I create. To make a record. To consider it as a body of work. Not made while waiting, but made while exploring, considering, learning. I am happy to share it and my musings with you. I hope you get something out of it, but if you don’t that’s ok. I did.
