story time

It’s time for an update on my book ‘A Mother’s Gift’, previously known as ‘Charlotte’s Story’.

Many thanks to Teresa, Bonnie, and Maureen for their beta read of my book. Their input helped make it better than it was. I have passed through it another time and filled some holes and am now ready for an editor. So I have hired one to take my book to the next level. Big step.

And I pushed the publication date to September because it will take that long to get through this next round of edits given that the world has opened up and I am going camping.

I wrote a number of chapters of the book that I pushed into the ‘backstory’ category because they weren’t required for the story I am telling for the reader to read. They helped me write the chapters that the story needs.

One chapter was about the grandmother of Irene and Alice (two of the main characters). Here name is Beatrice. The chapter tells about Beatrice being acceptance to university in a time when it was unusual for a woman to apply to university. At the most, women might be going to Nursing School. Teacher College or Secretarial School. But most married and ran homes and raised children.

In my story I wanted to explore the conflict between career vs home maker, in a family where Beatrice had strong opinions about the choice, and her two daughters who went two different ways.

Beatrice attends university and is excited about what is open up to her. And then, as it does, life changes and she has to return home. And defer her dreams to support her family.

I will post that chapter as I get close to publishing to share the world that Alice and Irene were raised in. It adds some depth to their childhood.

I was encouraged to create things when I was very young. Young girls were expected to do crafts. In retrospect, I think it was because we were expected to always be waiting for something. Not going out to find things for ourselves. That’s what I did different. I went out an explored for myself. And mostly by myself. Ironically enough, here I am with a website of what I create. To make a record. To consider it as a body of work. Not made while waiting, but made while exploring, considering, learning. I am happy to share it and my musings with you. I hope you get something out of it, but if you don’t that’s ok. I did.
